5 NECESSITY OF WATERSHED IN CHHATTISGARH STATE Chhattisgarh is geographically situated between 17 0 46'N to 24 0 5’ North latitude and 80 0 15'E and 84 0 20' East longitude. Having three agroclimatic zones. Geographical area 137.90 lakh ha. of which about 58.81 lakh ha. is cultivable. Forest land area is 63.55 lakh ha. Of more than 2.07 crore population Scheduled cast and Scheduled Tribes constitute 44.7%. To be contd.

6 About 80 percent of the population is dependent on agricultural and allied activities. Irrigation facility is available only for 27 percent of total sown area. Only 6 percent has assured irrigation. Rice and rice based cropping system in Chhattisgarh suffers from :- *Water stress due to uneven rainfall distribution pattern. *Unreliable and short supply of water hinders productivity. To be contd.

7 *Problems faced : low and erratic rainfall, high degradation of land resource, huge volume of runoff, depletion of soil fertility, depleting ground water table due to over utilization. To be contd. Require agricultural activities, watershed projects to enhance production, productivity and increased double cropping area by which per capita income may be raised. Presently the State Government is submitting proposals (PPRs) of 3.00 lakh ha.
