Today’s Agenda  Big Questions:  What is the Louisiana Purchase and what did it do?  SOL standard USI8.a:  The student will demonstrate knowledge of westward expansion and reform in America from 1801 to 1861 by  a) describing territorial expansion and how it affected the political map of the United States, with emphasis on the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the acquisitions of Florida, Texas, Oregon, and California.

3. Let’s Get Moving!  Everybody stand up (leave your materials on your desk)  I’ll count you all off into 4 groups  1) Fishers  2) Carpenters  3) Farmers  4) Blacksmiths  Think of an action that you would for your job  Ex: Blacksmiths hammer an anvil  Now everyone group up in the area I’ve made

4. Let’s Go Back a Little  1783- The end of the Revolutionary War  Over the next 20 years, the US slowly expanded.  In 1803 Thomas Jefferson wanted to buy New Orleans from France.  France wouldn’t sell New Orleans alone; Jefferson had to buy it and all of the Louisiana Purchase.  France needed money to fund fighting in Europe.

5. The Deal  The Louisiana Purchase is considered to be one of the greatest bargains in American history  15 million dollars (283 million in today’s dollars)  Gave the U.S. access to lots of resources, land, and opportunities
