1 Adding INTEGERS Adding Integers Blues Song - By Mr. W.

2 Definition Reminders Opposite Integers – 2 integers with the same numeral but different signs. Example: 5 and (-5) are opposite integers Zero Principle/Model – The sum of opposite integers is zero Example: 3 + (-3) = 0

3 Adding Integers Using Integer Chips
Example: 5 + (-6) = ? Place the first set of integer chips together (+5). Add the second set of integer chips underneath (-6) Remove the zero pairs Tiles you have left is the answer 5 + (-6) = -1

4 Adding Integers Using Integer Chips
Complete the following steps for each question below: Using integer chips, find the sum for each. Draw the solution in your notes (shade for negative chips) Write the equation and your answer. -2 + (-6) = ? 5 + (-5) = ? 7 + (-3) = ?

5 Adding Integers Using Number Lines
As a class, write the addition statement for the set of chips, and use a number line to solve.

6 Adding Integers Using Number Lines
Complete the following steps for each question below: Using number lines in your notes, find the sum for each. Write the equation and your answer. -2 + (-6) = ? 5 + (-5) = ? 7 + (-3) = ?

7 Adding Integers - Rules
Take a look at the questions where the integers have the same sign. Can you come up with a rule? Take a look at the questions where the integers have the opposite sign. Can you come up with a rule?

8 Adding Integers - Rules
If the signs are the same (all negative or all positive), keep the sign and add the numbers. If the signs are different, take the sign of the larger number, and then subtract the numbers (find the difference). Khan Example (Vid)

9 Adding Integers Strategies
Example: 5 + (-6) = (-1) Place the first set of integer chips together (+5). Add the second set of integer chips underneath (-6) Remove the zero pairs Tiles you have left is the answer (-1) Integer Chips Number Line Mental Rule If the signs are the same (all negative or all positive), keep the sign and add the numbers. If the signs are different, take the sign of the larger number, and then subtract the numbers (find the difference). +4 -8 -4 +8 Start at your first integer. The sign of the second integer indicates the direction, and the numerical value indicates how much you move.

10 Subtracting Integers Strategies
Example: (-2) - (-6) = +4 Integer Chips Represent your first integer with the chips (-2) Remove the number of chips the second integer represents (-6) If you can’t take them away, you need to add zero pairs until you get your second integer (add 4 zero pairs) Remove the chips represented by the second integer. What’s left is your answer (+4) Mental Rule (-2) – (-6) = (-2) + (+6) = +4 Subtraction of integers can be done mentally by adding the opposite integer. Then use the rules for adding integers.
