Example: 5 and (-5) are opposite integers
Zero Principle/Model – The sum of opposite integers is zero

Mental Rule

Start at your first integer. The sign of the second integer indicates the direction, and the numerical value indicates how much you move.

Example: (-2) - (-6) = +4

Represent your first integer with the chips (-2)
Remove the number of chips the second integer represents (-6)
If you can’t take them away, you need to add zero pairs until you get your second integer (add 4 zero pairs)
Remove the chips represented by the second integer. What’s left is your answer (+4)
Mental Rule
(-2) – (-6)
= (-2) + (+6)
= +4
Subtraction of integers can be done mentally by adding the opposite integer. Then use the rules for adding integers.
