2.1 Integers & Absolute Value 2.2 Adding Integers

2
Vocabulary Negative numbers: numbers less than zero. Integers: all the whole numbers, zero, and all the negative whole numbers. { …-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,…} Zero is not positive or negative. Absolute value: the distance away from zero on a number line.

3
|3| = 3 the absolute value of a positive number is just that same number. |-3| = 3 the absolute value of a negative number is its opposite. EXAMPLES: Page 59: # 1-19

4
Adding Integers Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers. EXAMPLE: 3 + 16 = 19 -3 + -5 = -8

5
2. To ADD numbers with different signs, SUBTRACT the absolutes values and the answer has the same sign as the number with the largest absolute value. EXAMPLE: -3 + 7 = 7 - 3 = 4 -5 + 2 = 5 - 2 = -3 4 + -10 = 10 – 4 = -6
