STATES OF MATTER WHAT ARE THE 4 STATES OF MATTER? WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SOLID? HOW DO MOLECULES MOVE IN SOLIDS, LIQUIDS, AND GASSES?

PHASES VS STATES Phase = a region where all matter has the same physical properties State = One of the forms that matter can take

SOLID definite shape & volume Molecules/atoms move slow strongly attracted to each other

2 TYPES OF SOLIDS: Crystalline – molecules in order Example: salt, sugar, snow, ice, diamond Amorphous – molecules are random Example: rubber, plastics, wax

LIQUID definite volume no definite shape Molecules/atoms move fast weakly attracted to each other.

VISCOSITY Attraction between molecules in a liquid physical property High = Sticky

GAS no definite shape or volume Molecules/atoms move very fast very weakly attracted to each other Gases are free flowing

PRESSURE Pressure When a gas fills a container, it pushes against the sides of the container. Temperature, mass, and volume affect pressure

PLASMA Superheated ionized gas Stars Lightning Neon signs Similar properties to gas Conducts electricity very well
