2 Replacing old/worn out tissue New cells generate by mitosis from the stroma (supporting connective tissue) or the parenchyma (cells that make the functioning part of the tissue or organ)

3 Stem Cells Immature, undifferentiated cells that can divide to replace worn out cells. Found in protected locations of the epithelium and the gastrointestinal tract

4 Scar Tissue When tissue repairs itself, different cells are active, if fibroblasts are active in the repair, the replacement tissue is new connective tissue. The fibroblasts make collagen fibers that come together to make scar tissue. Since scar tissue is not specialized for any function, the activity of the organ or tissue is affected

5 Adhesions Abnormal joining of tissue formed around a site of previous inflammation or after surgery. Can decrease tissue flexibility and make future operations more difficult

6 Common Disorders Autoimmune Disease – antibodies attack a person’s own body cells Rheumatoid Arthritis – attacks the synovial membranes of joints Sjogren’s Syndrome – causes inflammation and destruction of glands. Characterized by dryness of the mucous membranes
