1 Elementary Science Methods for the Diverse Classroom EDTE 316 (2+1) This course is designed for teacher candidates pursuing a Multiple Subject Credential in the CSUS Department of Teacher Education. The course reflects a developmental approach to science instruction congruent with the California Science Framework.

2 2 Course Objectives 1.Understands state-adopted science academic content standards (TPE Standard 1A.11). 2.Balances between information, concepts, and investigations (TPE Standard 1A.12). 3.Emphasizes importance of accuracy, precision, and estimation (TPE Standard 1A.13). 4.Explains the nature of science …and explain why it is important to teach... (TPE Standard 1A.13). 5.Demonstrates/applies each of the science process skills in …science lesson plans. (TPE Standard 1A.13).

3 3 Course Objectives(con’t) 6.Develops a unit of study that meets … EL & Special Populations in the General Education Classroom. (TPE Standard 1A.13; Standard 13; Standard 14). 7.Adapt science lessons for students with special needs & diverse students including EL (Standards 13 & 14) 8.Design performance assessments to appropriately and equitably measure achievement of all students 9.Use multimedia, online communication, web resources and other appropriate technology to enhance the learning of science for a diverse population of students 10.Participate in and develop strategies effectively as a member of a cooperative group.

7 7 Signature Assignment: Unit Design 1.Participate in planning & preparation of Unit Plan aligned with content standards 2.Individually design accompanying lesson plans and/or activities 3.Incorporate multiple methods of assessment
