11 Undergraduate Scholarships ►Funding for study abroad, internships, or senior thesis research ►Open to students in all fields ►Previous knowledge of German not required, but advantageous ►4-10 months during the German academic year ►Around 60 awarded annually

12 RISE ►“Research Internships in Science and Engineering” ►6-12 weeks in summer ►Undergrads work directly with German doctoral students at top labs across country ►No German required and scholarships and housing assistance are provided ►269 interns in 2007 ►New: Intensive language course

15 New Programs for Undergrads ►SIP: Study & Internship Program one semester coursework at a U.A.S. one semester internship supervised by U.A.S. for sophomores and juniors (at time of application) language requirements depend on individual program ►InternXchange 11 weeks in Berlin in the summer for journalism and communication majors and grad students taught program + internships in media good proficiency in German required

16 Study Scholarships ►Support for one or two years of study in Germany ►Can be used to earn a Master’s degree – some taught in English – at a German university ►German language ability should be commensurate with needs ►70 awarded annually

17 Research Grants ►1 to 10 months (with the possibility of an extension) ►For PhD candidates and postdocs, must have well- defined research project (also to complete PhD in Germany) ►Around 30 short term (< 6 mo.) and 60 long-term awarded annually

18 Tips for Success ►Express why a stay in Germany is critical for academic or professional goals. ►Letter of invitation from a German professor or institution. ►Explain clearly choice of location or program. ►Submit quality letters of recommendations.
