2 What is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards? u Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; u Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and u Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers. National Education Association (NEA) American Federation of Teachers (AFT) National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) American Association of School Administrators (AASA) Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) National School Boards Association (NSBA) National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) All 50 states and numerous localities

4 What is National Board Certification? NBC is a voluntary professional development process that recognizes accomplished teachers who meet rigorous standards of performance. These standards are grounded in five core propositions:

5 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership #1: Teachers are Committed to Students and Their Learning u Teachers recognize differences in their students and adjust their practice accordingly u Teachers have an understanding of how students develop and learn u Teachers treat students equitably u Teachers’ mission extends beyond developing the cognitive capacity of their students

6 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership #2: Teachers Know the Subjects They Teach and How to Teach Those Subjects to Students u Teachers appreciate how knowledge in their subjects is created, organized, and linked to other disciplines u Teachers command specialized knowledge of how to convey a subject to students u Teachers generate multiple paths to knowledge

10 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership Who is Eligible for National Board Certification? u a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution; u at least three years of successful teaching at one or more schools; and u a valid state teaching license (or employed in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state.) Teachers with:

11 How Does a Teacher Earn National Board Certification? u Portfolio that includes u student work samples u videotapes of lessons u reflective commentaries u evidence of collaborative work with colleagues and parents; continuous learner u Assessment Center exercises Teachers who seek National Board Certification must complete a:

19 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership What Support Will Teachers Get? u Pre-Candidacy Workshop March 10 and 11 u $2000 candidate fee paid for up to 10 teachers, remaining $565 is the responsibility of the candidate u Structured support program/NBCT Support Coordinator u 2 professional leave days to complete portfolio and/or prepare for the Assessment Center u 180 points for completing the process u Tuition support for one graduate credit course from VCU u 2-step salary increase from HCPS for the life of the certificate

22 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership What is Take One? u A unique offering from NBPTS where teachers prepare a video portfolio entry. A teacher can later transfer the score if he/she pursues National Board candidacy within two years. u This allows teachers to “sample” NB to improve their teaching and begin the path toward candidacy if they choose.

23 Copyright VCU Center for Teacher Leadership Eligibility and Support for Take One u Available to all teachers and administrators who have access to a preK-12 classroom u HCPS will pay $195 of the $295 fee; candidates are responsible for $100 u HCPS provides a support group for Take One Candidates
