2 Introduction Our focus Different teaching strategies for 1. Our higher ability students and 2. for our students that require more support Alternatively, this could read… 1. Our St Dominic’s route 2. Our St Michael’s route

3 Hermione v Ron Each and every student is different In reality, we can’t have 30 different teaching styles for each class BUT, we do need to appreciate that students of different abilities might need a different approach Hermione now needs a new challenge whereas for Ron, the Wizard needs to up his game!

RE-WRITE AN EXAM SPEC Write up an exam spec in ‘student speak’ 8. SHARE AND COMPARE Findings, problems, solutions Good opportunity to introduce visualizers

Routines, free from distractions, clear rules and expectations Don’t attack them as soon as they walk in the door 2. DEVELOP QUESTIONING Voting boxes, post-its, desks as whiteboards, silent signals, 1st names for students, Chinese whispers..

REDUCE TEACHER TALK Ask students to lead the introductions and instructions Signals & signposts Quiet area Thinking time 4. USE WHAT SUPPORT YOU CAN GET! 6 TH form are a great resource ICT? Video? Websites? 5. CHALLENGE AND SUPPORT THE STUDENTS ALWAYS!

DRAW IT! Pictures, logos, annotations 8. BEHAVIOUR Tough love for expectations, and praise and support for all, ‘what I love about your work…’

14 In Summary There are many different strategies we have at our disposal but the key point is to find what suits the needs of our learners best and also what suits us as individual teachers. Give the a try in lessons next week…see how you get on!
