What do my ELL students need from me? Manipulatives! Hands on activities Differentiated instruction Pictures, pictures, pictures One-on-one instruction
Facilitation in the Classroom Adjust your presentation Face the students when speaking Clearly indicate important ideas Focus on students meaning not the grammar Increase wait time for answers
When speaking to ELL student Ask questions in simple language Ask for elaboration “tell me more” Be a good listener Provide difficult words
Best Practice Strategies Establish a routine Write assignments and schedules on the same place Assign buddies Include students in all activities in some way Use graphic organizers
Best Practices cont Use hands on manipulative when possible Modify assignments to meet student’s ability level Develop content vocabulary Modify teacher talk – speak slowly and use gestures
