Romiette and Julio Sharon M. Draper Copyright 1999 Dasia Colley

Intro The story takes place in Cincinnati, OH. The two major characters, Romiette and Julio, are introduced. This story is a modern day Romeo and Juliet where two star-crossed lovers are in for a dramatic experience.

Protagonist: Romiette Cappelle – She’s a dreamer – She’s outspoken – She can’t swim and is afraid of water – Her favorite color is orange – She’s tall with soft brown skin, dark brown hair and a big smile.

Antagonist: The Family a.k.a. The Devildogs Hate Romiette and Julio’s relationship Believe that only two people of the same ethnicity should date Bully kids around the school Always wear purple and dog chains Bring terror into Romiette and Julio’s relationship

The Dangers of Love Romiette and Julio are deeply in love, but The Family doesn’t agree to it. Conscious of The Family’s hatred for their relationship, Romiette and Julio are expecting the worst from them. They are faced with a decision of risking their lives, or letting a gang win the battle.

Minor Characters Destiny Destiny is Romiette’s best friend who is into zodiac and sun signs. Ben Ben is Julio’s best friend who has a unique personality. His hair is a different color everyday and is into music.

Minor Characters Cont. Lady Cappelle Lady Cappelle is Romiette’s mother who resembles royalty through her lady-like ways and queenly walk. Cornell Cappelle Cornell Cappelle is Romiette’s father who is a television newscaster. He’s a really cool parent who listens to Romiette about everything.

What Critics Say http:// www.goodreads.com/review/show/32 1135018 The book keeps its readers on the edge of their seats until the very end due to its suspense as well as Draper’s use of words. The story’s theme can be summarized as, “doing anything for love.” http:// www.goodreads.com/review/show/13 2256342 The book’s conflict is similar to the original story of Romeo and Juliet, but differs. In Draper’s novel, there is a sense of racial prejudice among the love- stricken teens by a gang that does not agree with their relationship. The novel gives more insight into problems that many young people face today.

My Perspective In my point of view, Draper’s Romiette and Julio symbolizes a hope that many young people have today of finding that special someone. I also feel that when that special person is found, anything will be done to try and stay with that person no matter what. Real love is hard to find, but once it is found, is it worth the sacrifice?
