Do Now October 23, 2012

Select the best answer choice: 1. Information gathered with your sense is called A. A hypothesis B. A scientific investigation. C. An inference. D. An observation. 2. Information collected during an experiment is called A. Data. B. A graph. C. A scientific investigation. D. A controlled variable. 3. During an experiment, when do you state a conclusion? a. Before beginning the experiment. b. Right after stating a hypothesis. c. While collecting the data. d. After analyzing the data

Objectives  Students will be able to classify and identify elements as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.  Students will be able to create a pie chart using the elements of the earth’s crust.  Students will be able to analyze and describe the chemical changes of a candle.

Review: Classifying Elements  Elements can be divided into three main groups: Metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.  Examples of metals: lead, copper, tin, aluminum, and iron  Examples of nonmetals: sulfur, iodine, and oxygen  Examples of metalloids: silicon and germanium

Properties of Elements  Characteristics of elements you can easily measure or observe:  Phase  Mass  Solubility  Color  Odor

Physical Properties of metals and nonmetals Metals Good conductors of heat and electricity Shiny in appearance (have luster) Malleable Ductile All metals are solids except mercury (mercury is a liquid) Nonmetals Poor conductors of heat and electricity Dull in appearance (lack luster) Shatter or crumble when struck Nonductile Exist in all three physical states(solid, liquid, & gas)

Elements composing the Earth’s crust/Analyze and create a circle/pie graph Element  Oxygen  Silicon  Aluminum  Iron  Calcium  Sodium  Potassium  Magnesium  Total Percentage by weight  46.60  27.72  8.13  5.00  3.63  2.83  2.59  2.09  98.59

Activity 2 Complete questions 1-10 on page 63 Complete questions 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20 Please write the question and the answer.

Homework Create 10 test questions from Ch. 2 that you would like to see on the test. Define the properties of elements.
