1 Physical Properties of……
Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids!

2 Metals usually……….. Are silver-grey in color.
Are solid at room temperature (except mercury). Reflect light when polished (Luster). Can be bent or hammered (Malleable). Can be drawn into a wire (Ductile). Are strong & resist bending & breaking (tensile strength).

3 Metals usually………. REMEMBER, there can be exceptions!
Have a characteristic sound when struck with an object (sonorous). Have high melting points. (changes from solid to liquid) Have high boiling points. (changes from liquid to gas) Are good conductors of heat and electricity. Have high densities ( heavy for their size). Can be attracted to a magnet.

4 OXYGEN CARBON NITROGEN CHLORINE
Nonmetals usually…….. OXYGEN O CARBON C Exist as a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature. Do not reflect light well (no luster). Are brittle (break apart easily). Cannot be hammered flat (not malleable). Cannot be drawn into a wire (not ductile). Are soft and bend and break easily (low tensile strength). NITROGEN N CHLORINE CL

5 Neon ARGON Nonmetals usually……….. Ne
Do not have a sound when struck (not sonorous). Have low melting points. Have low boiling points. Are poor conductors of heat and electricity. Have low densities (light weight for their size). Are not attracted to a magnet. REMEMBER, there can be exceptions! ARGON Ar

6 Metalloids usually………
Si Silicon B Boron Are generally solid. Can be either shiny or dull (luster). May or may not be drawn into a wire (ductile). May or may not be hammered flat (malleable). May or may not be brittle. Conduct heat and electricity better than nonmetals but not as well as metals. As Arsenic Te Tellurium

7 Sb Antimony At Astatine
Metalloids usually……. Sb Antimony Ge Germanium Tend to make good semiconductors. Have boiling points that are varied. Have melting points that are varied. Have densities that are varied. Main metalloids are boron (B), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb), tellurium (Te), astatine (At), and polonium (Po). At Astatine Po Polonium
