Refresh, Set, & Assess Questions & Lesson Guide for Solutions Demonstration

Refresh – Answer this Review Question in your science notebook Which of the following statements about the motion of the squirrel is true? A The squirrel moved with the greatest speed between 0 s and 5 s. B The squirrel moved with the greatest speed between 8 s and 10 s. C The squirrel moved with a constant speed between 0 s and 8 s. D The squirrel moved with a constant speed between 5 s and 10 s.

Set – Get ready for today’s learning activity mixtureExplain why saltwater is a mixture and NOT a compound. Hint: Look back at your notes from the PowerPoint.

Set – Get ready for today’s learning activity Answer: Salt (NaCl) is a compound. Water (H20) is a compound. Salt + Water = saltwater NOT a new substance! Salt & water can be physically separated by distillation.

Solute in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent. –Kool-aid drink mix (powder) –Sugar

Solvent in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves. water

Dissolve When the solute disappears and is absorbed into the solvent. Stirring helps the solute to dissolve.

Solution A mixture of 2 or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase. The Kool-aid drink is a solution when mixed.

Concentrated The amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture. When Kool-aid powder was dissolved in a glass of water it was more concentrated than when it was mixed.

Diluted. When more water was added to the solution, it became more diluted.

Homogeneous a mixture that has the same uniform appearance & composition throughout. When the sugar & Kool-aid are dissolved completely, the solute is evenly spread out throughout the mixture.

Heterogeneous a mixture that visibly has different substances or phases. When ice was added a solid was visible in the liquid and the mixture was not the same throughout.

Assess – How much did you learn? What was the solute in the demonstration? What was the solvent in the demonstration? What helped the solute to dissolve? Would you like to sample the solution?
