4 So, what is an INTERJECTION ? INTERJECTIONS are not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. They are uncommon in formal academic writing except in direct quotations. They most often show emotion or excitement. Parts of Speech: What is an INTERJECTION?

9 Why should we use INTERJECTIONS in our writing? – check these out: Show hesitation, also set off by a comma: “Um, do you want that last bite?” Express strong feelings, use an exclamation point: “Oh, no!” or “Ouch! That hurts!” If it’s a mild feeling, just use a comma: “Hey, are you going too?”

10 Why should we use INTERJECTIONS in our writing? – check these out: Show outrage: “No! You can’t do that!” Express surprise: “Excellent!” or “Wow! That’s awesome!” Show confusion: “Huh? I don’t get it?”

12 What do we think of authors or writers who don’t use parts of speech correctly? They do not proofread. They are lazy (and probably boring). They do not take the time to re-read their work. They don’t care if the reader enjoys their writing

14 Practice: Identify each interjection. 1.“Oh, my goodness!” cried Mrs. Wallace, the head librarian. “We’ve got mites in the atlas again!” 2.“No kidding!” chuckled Len, her assistant. “Tell them to enjoy their trip.” 3.Sandy rounded the corner at the bottom of the hill. “Uh-oh!” she gasped. “I forgot to have the brakes fixed on this bike!”

15 4. “Hee, hee!” chortled the villainous banker. “I finally own the mortgage on the widow’s little cabin!” 5. “Ha!” laughed the widow. “Keep it. I own the mortgage on your penthouse!” 6. “Say, Charlie,” called his teacher. “I noticed that you didn’t hand in your homework this morning.” 7. “Well, Mr. Anderson,” Charlie answered, “I was going to tell you that our canary ate it, but we only have a dog.”

16 8. Six-year-old Ian woke up late with a start. “Oh, rats!” he grumbled. “If today’s not Saturday, I’m going to be tardy!” 9. Janine looked down into the cereal bowl and gagged. “Eeeew, what is that stuff? It looks just awful!” 10. “Yuck!” exclaimed Cindy. “You’re right, but I don’t know what it is. That’s your bowl.”
