M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Layout and Design The Rule of Thirds Created by Rhonda Goetz, Multimedia Instructor

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Rule of Thirds  Defined Photographic method used to frame a composition  determines where to place the main elements of an image Concept:  the strength of an image improves when the main elements are placed at locations away from the center of the frame  Exceptions: –when the main object does not compete with anything else –when a strong balance already exists

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Apply the Rule  Visualize Grid  Visualize the image broken into thirds  Create a grid in your mind  Components Identify the major components Determine their placement so that it adheres to the rule

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Examples Photos from: http://photoinf.com/General/KODAK/guidelines_for_better_photographic_composition_rule_of_thirds.html

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a More Examples

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Weighting the Horizon  Top-weight an image Placing it along the upper horizontal line in the Rule of Thirds grid Creates a more visually appealing image

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a Following the Rule  Steps Identify the major components Visually weight the components  Examples: –Light colors “weigh” less than dark colors (when they take the same amount of space in the image) –Elements that take up more physical space in the frame weighs more than an element that uses less space. Trisect the image with two horizontal and two vertical lines, creating four intersecting points. Place the main subjects where the lines intersect.

M U L 110 - I n t r o t o M u l t I m e d i a NEXT: The Composite Image Assignment Your composite image must adhere to the Rule of Thirds. Make sure you understand this concept.
