1 The Body in Motion Year 10 Physical Education Term 3

2 Unit Aim: To introduce students to basic biomechanical and physiological principles as they relate to human movement (physical activity). To allow students to investigate and utilise these principles in various sporting contexts.

3 What is Biomechanics?  is the study of what makes the body move, and looks at the results of that movement.  is the study of the human body in movement  It looks at the forces that act on the body and the effects of those forces on the body.

4 Why Year 10 ?  Outline that all human movement in all physical activities and sports incorporate a variety of biomechanical and physiological principles and concepts – science in sport!  Aim is to introduce these concepts and principles so that those students taking Level 1 NCEA Physical Education ( Year 11 ) will be familiar with them.

5 Biomechanical Principles Students will be introduced to the biomechanical principles of: Stability and Balance Motion Momentum Force Summation Levers Projectile Motion Students will be introduced to the physiological principles of : The Cardio-respiratory system The Energy Systems

19 Sport Case Study: Students are to choose a sport that they have an interest in or actively participate in. They are to gather an image of a person actively involved in the game and attach it to the case study document Students are required to outline and explain in detail how 4 biomechanical principles are utilised within any skill or activity within the chosen sport. ie –Rowing – levers / 3 rd class lever.

22 Unit Format Countries of the Olympics Students will organise themselves into 4 equally numbered teams / countries These chosen countries should be represented at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Within the context of “ The Body in Motion” unit, each country will compete against each other for points in each of the above events. Points will be allocated: 1st = 4 2nd = 3 3rd = 2 4th = 1

23 Aim is to introduce students to the biomechanical and physiological concepts in a variety of sports that are being competed in at the Beijing Olympic Games. Badminton Tennis Soccer Basketball Gymnastics Hockey Running
