9 Jesus was born into a Graeco-Roman world... What does this mean?

10 King Herod Even worse, the important people in Jewish society were really only puppets of the Romans, and had no real power. The High Priest who made all the final decisions about the Temple, was appointed by the Romans. King Herod, who was meant to be the King of the Jews, was also appointed by the Romans, and followed their orders. King Herod got permission from the Romans to rebuild the Temple in its original splendour. He thought this would make him popular with the Jews, and make him famous. He did not rebuilt it because he cared about God - he only cared about his own fame and power. His workmen began in 20 BC but did not finish until 80 years later in AD 64 – so it was in the process of being built in Jesus’ lifetime.
