Goals and Rewards Heart Health

Goals What are goals? Why is it important to set goals? How are long-term and short-term goals related?

What are goals? “The end toward which effort is directed.” Merriam- Webster dictionary A vision for what you want to achieve:  Something you want to learn  A way you want to think or feel  A way you want to look  Something you want to do

Why is it important to set goals? Help you decide the steps to take First, decide what you want in the end  Vision  Long-term goal Next, decide how to get there  Plan  Short-term goals

How are long-term and short-term goals related? Picture yourself connected to your long term goal by a chain. The links in the chain are the short-term goals. Short-term goals help provide the motivation to stick to the plan (long-term goal).

SMART Goals Specific—do you know who, what, where, when, and how? Measurable—how will you know when you’ve reached your goal? Attainable—is this a goal you want to reach? Realistic—is it possible for you to reach this goal? Timely—can you reach this goal in a limited amount of time?

What is Motivation? “…having the desire & willingness to do something…” Long-term goals versus short-term goals Level of work needed Amount of time devoted

Tips for getting motivated Remember your reasons why Imagine success Talk with your mentor or supporters Watch, read or look at something motivating Believe in yourself!!!

Rewards Extrinsic  External  Praise, money, prizes Intrinsic  Internal  Satisfaction, accomplishment, pride

Parents: Rewards are important! Helps with those first steps in motivation Stipulations:  Nothing food or food-related  Must be something the child will be excited to get that the parent is willing to give  Must be decided on before working on goals  Must be contingent on the goals only, which means the child should get the prize if he/she meets his/her goals, NO MATTER WHAT!

Goal-Setting “Based on the notion that individuals have a drive to reach a clearly-defined end state.” SMART goals

Motivational Quotes " The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." --Joseph Campbell The only thing that stands between a man and what he wants from life is often merely the will to try it and the faith to believe that it is possible. --Richard M. DeVos "People with goals succeed because they know where they are going... It's as simple as that." --Earl Nightingale "Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working 24 hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force." --Tom Blandi "We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal and then leap in the dark to our success." --Henry David Thoreau If you think you are beaten you are; If you think you dare not, you don't; If you want to win but think you can't; It's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose you're lost; For out of the world we find Success begins with a fellow's will; It's all in a state of mind. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger and faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. --Author Unknown
