Lecture 1: Introduction to the Engineering Profession EEE2032: 공학입문설계 서강대학교 전자공학과 2012 학년도 1 학기

2 Chapter 1: Introduction to the Engineering Profession Engineers are problem solvers. Successful engineers possess good communication skills and are team players. They have a good grasp of fundamental physical laws and mathematics. Engineers apply physical and chemical laws and mathematics to design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of millions of products and services. They consider important factors such as efficiency, cost, reliability, and safety when designing products. Engineers are dedicated to lifelong learning and service to others.

Topics Do I really want to study engineering? What is engineering and what do engineers do? What are some of the areas of specialization in engineering? Do I want to become an electrical engineer? How many different engineering disciplines are there? How will I know that I have picked the best field for me? Will the demand for my area of specialization be high when I graduate, and beyond that? 3 Some answers to these and other questions will be provided.

Science vs. Engineering Science –Understand, describe, explain Engineering –Design and build –“An engineer can do for a nickel what any fool can do for a dollar” (H. Ford) 4

Traditional View Fundamental research Applied research Niels BohrThomas Edison 5

Alternate View Concern with fundamentals Concern with use Edison Pasteur; much of biomedical and engineering research Bohr X 6

Engineers make products and provide services that make our lives better. –During the night, –When you get up in the morning, 1.1 Engineering Work Is All Around You 7

–You need to realize that what you do in a few years after your graduation is very important to all of us. –To become a good engineer - to contribute to raising the living standard for everyone. a lifelong learner –You need to become a lifelong learner so that you can make informed decisions and anticipate as well as react to the global changes caused by technological innovations as well as population and environmental changes. 1.1 Engineering Work Is All Around You 8

What is engineering and what do engineers do? –Engineers apply physical and chemical laws and principles and mathematics to design millions of products and services that we use in our daily lives. 1.2 Engineering as a Profession 9

What is engineering and what do engineers do? –Engineers consider important factors such as cost, efficiency, reliability, and safety when designing products. –Some common careers for engineers, in addition to design, Sales representatives for products Providing technical support and troubleshooting Not all engineers work for private industries – some work for federal, state, and local government. There are many satisfying and challenging jobs for engineers. 1.2 Engineering as a Profession 10

Some personality traits and work habits that typify most successful engineers. –Engineers are problem solvers. –Firm grasp of the fundamental principles of engineering –Analytical, detailed oriented, and creative –A desire to be lifelong learners –Having core knowledge that can be applied to many areas –Written and oral communication skills –Time-management skills –People skills –Using computers in many different ways to model and analyze various practical problems –Active participation in discipline-specific organizations –Work in a team environment 1.3 Common Traits of Good Engineers 11

Most engineering degrees are granted in electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering, the parents of all other engineering branches. 1.3 Common Traits of Good Engineers 12

A list of a few web sites that provide you useful information on engineering disciplines –The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers http://www. ieee.org –The Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea http://www.ieek.or.kr What are some areas of engineering specialization? –The branches of electrical engineering may include: Power generation and transmission Communications Control Electronics Integrated circuits Biomedical 1.3 Engineering Disciplines 13
