 Starter: Fill in the gaps on Latitude & Longitude.  Cut out & glue in L.O: Explain why there are different types of maps and map projections

 Complete the worksheet  Use an Atlas on shelf at back of room

 Physical: Shows what the land looks like. Features like lakes, rivers, mountains are shown on a physical map  Political: Shows how humans have divided land up into countries and states. The lines (borders) are imaginary, not real lines.  Which type of map is more likely to change over human lifespan?

 Choose a map type if you want to know: 1. What the capital city of a country is? 2. How many lakes are found in a country? 3. Which country has more land? 4. How many mountains an area has? 5. How many countries a river flows through?

 The map we look at every day on the wall is wrong. Why?  Projecting a spherical area on a flat surface is impossible!  That is why all maps are WRONG. There are many different ways of projecting the earth on flat surfaces, each has strengths and weaknesses.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zBC2dv ERM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zBC2dv ERM  Watch the clip  Why did the group say that the current map projection is unfair?

 Positives: Shows the land masses as the right shapes. Easy to navigate  Negatives: Bigger towards the poles than the equator

 Positives: Area accurate map, size of each country is perfectly to scale  Negatives: Shape becomes distorted, showing countries as ‘stretched’.

 Positives: Shows only minor distortions in size, distance and shape.  Negatives: Is a mixture of imperfections, not precise in ANY field.

 Positives: Shows distance and direction perfectly  Negatives: Size and shape are distorted

 Those are just 3 of MANY different map projections.  Which do you think is the best and why?  Is it horses for courses?

 Where are we on our progress line?  How much progress have you made? I fully understand the LO I’m not really sure what the LO is about

Homework: Answer these questions: 1. If you are at a “high latitude” what might the temperature be like? 2. If you are at a “low latitude” what might the temperature be like?”
