What does this mean?

4 Topics Curriculum overviews, for every year group, will be found on the Briary website. The main topics for Year 1 are: Storytime Light and dark To the rescue Animals and us Our World All aboard.

5 Homework Maths games are changed every Friday.
The learning journals are for your topic homework. Homework will be marked, celebrated and shared with the class. Topic related homework will be set (in the ocean diary) each Friday, due in before the following Friday.

6 ‘Ocean Diaries’ Every Friday, we check the ocean diaries for reading and parent/guardian signatures. We also sign them and hand out reading stamps. Please ensure that your child reads at least three times a week (ten - fifteen minutes) and sign in the diary to let us know. The children are responsible for changing their own reading books in the mornings.

7 Targets Reading, writing and maths targets will be sent home to you at the first parents meeting – Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th November. Reading: Decoding, comprehension and reading for meaning. Writing : Personalised - two stars and one goal. Maths: instant recall of number facts. Please do not hesitate to come in and ask for any advice or resources to help your child achieve their targets.

9 School Dinners All Year 1 children are entitled to free school meals.
Children choose (on the day) if they would like a school packed lunch or a hot dinner. Two counters in the hall serving hot meals. Salad, fruit and fresh water available. The kitchen is nut-free. ‘Pupil premium’ - government funding. Registering for free meals could raise an extra £1,300 for the school. Please complete the free school meals registration form.

10 Swimming – Term 4 and 5 We travel on the bus.
The children will be split into groups according to their swimming ability. They will be responsible for getting themselves dried and changed – may be worth practising beforehand!

11 KS1 Phonics Screening Continuing Letters and Sounds program throughout Key Stage 1. At the end of the year there will be a screening to check the children’s decoding skills which they either pass or re take in Year 2. Parent workshops – keep an eye on the bulletin.

12 What can you do to help? Read with your child regularly.
Ask your child questions about the book they are reading. Play the maths game and talk about maths. Help them to complete their homework each week. Work on your child’s targets (to be discussed at parents evening).
