3 Suppose we had 1.00 mole of sucrose (it's about 342.3 grams) and proceeded to mix it into some water. It would dissolve and make sugar water. We keep adding water, dissolving and stirring until all the solid was gone. We then made sure that when everything was well-mixed, there was exactly 1.00 liter of solution. What would be the molarity of this solution? A replacement for mol/L is often used. It is a capital M. So if you write 1.00 M for the answer, then that is correct.

4 Example Calculate the molarity of a solution prepared by mixing 1.5 g of NaCl in 500.0 mL of water. First calculate the moles of solute: 1.5 g NaCl (1 mole NaCl) = 0.0257 moles of NaCl 58.45 g NaCl Next convert mL to L: Last, plug the appropriate values into the correct variables in the equation: M = n / V = 0.0257 moles / 0.500 L = 0.051 mol/L 0.500 L
