Juan David Rios IMDL FALL 2012 Dr. Eric M. Schwartz – A. Antonio Arroyo September 18/2012

1. Scope  AlienBot 2. Approach to the problem  The hows of AlienBot 3. What has been done and some results  Capabilities, software, hardware 4. Future plans

 AlienBot is robot that can follow lines (with IR sensors), look for intense light sources and look for colored objects (aliens) in a designated area. The robot will shot them with a laser. This laser will be controlled by a mechanical manipulator.  Trajectories of different shapes, edges and height marked over the floor.  If the robot reaches a dead end, it will move randomly avoiding obstacles until finds an object.

 Capabilities  Mobility: motors  Follow lines: infrared sensors.  Avoid obstacles: sonar sensors.  Color detection: android smartphone’s built-in camera  Intense light source detection: Photo detector  Show feedback information: android smartphone’s display or a simple LCD display

 Software  C: to program the arduino board  Python with OpenCV: in order to work with image processing  Java/Python: to develop applications for android and use all its features  Installed the development tools to work with android and arduino. Some code was implemented in Python to work with the laptop camera and OpenCV.

 Hardware  Arduino board ADK 2560  HTC one S  2 Motors /2 wheels  2 H bridges L293D  Sensors ▪ Ultrasound sensor ▪ Infrared sensor ▪ Motor encoder ▪ Camera ▪ Bluetooth module ▪ Photo detector

 Turn on-off the robot wirelessly (bluetooth)  The robot will follow the next order of precedence:  Avoid obstacles  Follow line (trajectory)  Reach blue colored target  Reach intense light source  Move randomly

 Design the robot in SolidWorks.  Implement all the electronics associated to the motors and start to think in the mechanical manipulator for the laser.  Software development for android and arduino:  Line tracking, object avoidance, wireless comm, color detection  Construction of robot chassis  Mounting motors, servos, sensors, microcontroller and android  There is a lot of work, let’s do it!
