3 NOVEMBER 2004 CEU HUNGARY Azerbaijan is a unitary state and a presidential republic. The president is elected every 4 years by direct elections. The republic gained its independence from the USSR in 1991. Since then Azerbaijan became a member of UN (1992) and Council of Europe (2002). STATE STRUCTURE

4 TERRITORY AND BORDERS NOVEMBER 2004 CEU HUNGARY When Azerbaijan was forcibly annexed into the USSR, its total territory was 114,000 sq. km; on regaining its independence in 1991 Azerbaijan's territory was 86,600 sq. km and after the Armenian occupation it is less than 70, 000.

5 NOVEMBER 2004 CEU HUNGARY The capital of Azerbaijan is Baku. In translation Baku means the city of winds (Badikuba). Population of the capital constitutes 2 000 000 p. There are a lot of historical monuments in the capital. If you come to Baku the first place to go is Icheri Shekher (the old City) which was build in the middle ages. CAPITAL

6 POPULATION NOVEMBER 2004 CEU HUNGARY Azerbaijan is a home to 7,868,385 people (2003 est.). Men population constitutes 47, 4 %, while women population constitutes 52,6 %. Birth rate is 19,8/1000. Infant mortality rate is 82.1/1000. Life expectancy = 63.3.

7 NATURAL RESOURCES NOVEMBER 2004 CEU HUNGARY Azerbaijan is rich with oil, gas, cotton, best sorts of grapes and mineral springs. A number of foreign oil companies operate in Azerbaijan. Currently, Azerbaijan's export pipelines are the Baku- Novorossiisk, which sends Azeri oil to the Russian Black Sea, and the Baku-Supsa, which mainly carries oil to Georgia's Black Sea coast.
