4  Europeans first arrived in 1502 on a voyage with Amerigo Vespucci.  The first permanent establishment wasn’t until 1580 when Spain established a colony in Buenos Aires.  July 9,1816-General Jose de San Martin declared independence from Spain.  1946- Peron was elected President

5  Federal Republic  2 legislative bodies  Cristina Fernandez de Kirchiner is the chief of state and head of state since 2007, she is the first female president of the country.  Argentina is divided into 23 provinces.

6  The most important economic is industry.  Approximately 1/4 th of its workers are employed in manufacturing.  Major Industries-food, leather, textiles, and chemical& petrochemical.

10  Argentina means “land of silver”  Argentina has rights to Tierra del Fuego.  Aconcagua is the worlds highest mountain outside of the Himalaya's at 22,834 feet.
