2nd THING TO LEARN TODAY: Islam is related to Christianity and Judaism All 3 religions involve the same God (Allah) All 3 religions share similar holy text, with slight variations in their stories Islam acknowledges Jews and Christians as “people of the book”

Where did Islam come from?  Started in a trade center named Mecca  Mecca was an important trade center in the Arabian Desert.  Turn to page 264

Write/Draw this in your notes: (Left Side)  Revelations:  The Hijrah  Return to Mecca  (Right Side)  Vertical Relationship  Horizontal Relationship

Islam can be understood in 3 parts  Revelations: (page 264)  Muhammad is chosen to be a prophet by an angel of God  What does a prophet do?  The Hijrah: (page265)  Muhammad and his Muslim followers are attacked and forced to leave Mecca  Movement to Medina – Islamic following grows over 8 years  Return to Mecca: (page 265)  Muhammad and his Muslim followers return to Mecca  Islam reigns as chief religion in the region

Describe the Relationships (right side) (Left Side)  Revelations:  The Hijrah  Return to Mecca (Right Side)  Vertical Relationship  How do the revelations create a vertical relationship?  Horizontal Relationship  How did the Hijrah create a horizontal relationship?  Horizontal Relationship  How did “the return” create a horizontal relationship?

Why Jerusalem matters to Muslims  Dome of the Rock Dome of the Rock  Night Journey

Why Jerusalem Matters to Everyone 3 Religions – Islam, Judaism, Christianity 1 Major Holy Site for Each

The Crusades:  In the Middle Ages Europe launched a series of “Holy Wars” (Crusades) to capture the “Holy Land”  There were 4 crusades in all and over 300 years Muslims and Christians fought a bloody war.  In all they were senseless wars, that solved nothing.  1 st Crusade Jerusalem Captured by Christians  2 nd Crusade Jerusalem Captured by Muslims  3 rd Crusade Uneasy Peace in Jerusalem, Muslims maintain power  4 th Crusade Greedy Europeans sack Constantinople (never made it to Jerusalem)

Why did they go?  Pope demanded that Christians control Jerusalem  “GOD WILLS IT!”  Pope declares that anyone who Crusades will automatically go to Heaven.  War and Conquering = $$$  Knights can conquer new land and become lords (move up in society)  1 st born children inherit everything, younger siblings go to gain wealth/power  Europe had too many Knights  Knights in Europe fought over land, and were causing too much internal fighting  Crusades brought peace to Europe
