2 New England Colonies: – Lots of forests, rolling hills, and a short growing season; – Little chance to get rich; – Later, trade and commerce will bring prosperity to New England

3 Puritans and the Church of England: Most of the New England colonists were religious dissidents who disagreed with the established church; Known as Puritans, they wanted to purify the Church of England, or Anglican Church, the only official and legal church in the kingdom; Puritans complained that the Anglican Church, although Protestant, retained too many ceremonies from the Catholic Church

4 Puritans and the Church of England: – Some Puritans sought to reform the Anglican Church, others known as separatists, began their own churches

5 Puritan Beliefs and Values: – Following teachings of John Calvin; – Live moral lives, pray devoutly, read the Bible, and heed their minister’s sermons – Salvation depended on the will of God rather than good behavior or adherence to church rules

6 Puritans Arrive in Massachusetts: – In 1620, Puritans, also called Pilgrims, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the ship the Mayflower to found a Plymouth colony on the south shore of Massachusetts – Mayflower Compact: An agreement made by the Puritans which stressed self- government

7 Massachusetts Bay Colony: – Led by John Winthrop – 1630 – Settlers established a republic, where the Puritan men elected their governor, deputy governor, and assembly; – This was the most radical colony because it was the only colony that elected its own governor.

8 Religious Dissenters from New Colonies: – Most of the Puritans did not advocate religious toleration: Puritans announced that NO Catholics, Baptists, or Quakers, need come to New England Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson angered the Puritan authorities in Massachusetts had not done enough to break with Anglican ways. Anne Hutchinson was banned from the Colony; Roger Williams fled and founded Providence, Rhode Island, in 1636

9 Salem Witch Trials: – Witches had been identified, prosecuted, and neutralized. – In Salem, Massachusetts, 19 suspected witches were executed;

10 Conflicts with Native Americans: – Puritans saw the Native Americans as lazy savages – Peqout War: war between Peqout and Puritans – Puritans burned Peqout village that was filled with mostly women and children.

11 Conflicts with Native Americans: Praying Towns: – Puritans worked to convert and transform Indians into replicas of English Christians – They pressured the Indians to move into special “praying towns” where the Indians could be closely supervised by missionaries. Missionaries forced the praying town Indians to abandon their traditional ways and to don English clothing
