2  CHILDREN'S CODE – Title 19 of the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS) ◦ A person under the age of eighteen is considered a juvenile (not an adult). This term refers to a child who is charged with committing a delinquent act, and is guided by the Federal Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act (2002) which promotes accountability within the juvenile justice system. ◦ In Colorado, a juvenile cannot typically be charged with a crime until the age of ten.

3  Civil Code ◦ Typically about agreements between people or businesses and may involve money  Breach of contract, services, agreements or ownership  Criminal Code ◦ Pertains to a criminal incident, as defined by various State and Federal laws  Murder, assault, robbery, burglary, theft, criminal mischief, harassment, some forms of fraud

4  Violent Crimes: Crimes that typically include the use of force and/or are committed against a person ◦ Murder, assault, rape, robbery  Property Crimes: Crimes that typically involve belongings but do not include a violent act against a person ◦ Burglary, criminal mischief, theft, arson

5  Felony: A category of crime (F6-F1) which involves a high degree of risk or loss to the victim ◦ Greater physical violence or damage/loss >$999  Murder, rape, burglary, motor vehicle theft  Misdemeanor: A category of crime (M3-M1) which generally involves a lesser degree of risk or loss to the victim ◦ Less physical violence or loss <$1000  Criminal mischief, harassment, shoplifting  Petty Offense: Least of all offenses (P2-P1), usually pertain to a crime not involving a “victim”  Minor in possession of alcohol, possession of drug paraphernalia
