2  WHY Do Prevention Skills Matter? IS Prevention the ANSWER?  Can Sharing NIDA’s Research Make a Difference? YOUR THOUGHTS???  WHY Will We Continue to Organize and Create A PREVENTION PROJECT and PRESENTATION to MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

3  If you think drugs won't affect your health, think again. Get the facts about the most commonly abused drugs. Learn what they are and how using drugs, even just once, can affect your body and your mind (http://teens.drugabuse.gov/drug-facts).

4  The goal of having a national agency that supports drug abuse research is to help prevent drug abuse and addiction. The more research we have to prove that addiction is a dangerous and lifelong brain disease, the more able we are to reduce the devastating effects that drug abuse has on individuals, their families and communities, and society as a whole.

5  NIDA's goal is to give people scientific knowledge about the dangers of drug abuse. Therefore, NIDA continues to explore how drugs work in the brain and body, and to develop and test new approaches to treatment and prevention. The first step is taken by researchers; the next step is up to you. How will you use this knowledge?  SO… Knowledge IS Power! 6  PLUS …Building Character and Prevention Skills  Sharpening One’s Awareness  Making Responsible and Healthy Choices  Question: Are You a Lifter, Thruster, Weight, or Drag? WHY is it IMPORTANT to KNOW?

7  “Literacies” = Literature – Informational Text – Historical Documents - Visual – Media  We will CONTINUE and COMPLETE the UPP Project to CONNECT ALL FIVE!  Can YOU Do It SUCCESSFULLY?  IMAGINE: Leaving ASAP as a Student Leader Who Has Been Empowered to KNOW the Facts, MAKE Healthful Choices, BUILD Character, IMPROVE Relationships, SEE the Value of an Education, EMBRACE the Future!

8  Either Individually or Collaboratively (in Pairs), the UPP Project WILL BE Completed as a Six Part Activity By:  Displaying Key Drug Facts (statistics/effects).  Raising Awareness About Prevention Skills (2-4) and Character Building (1-3).  Using Resources for an Engaging Activity  Providing a Handout/Visual/Media Literacy  Making a Final Presentation to an Audience….
