Emergency ES session #2 ES question Type 2 : Comparison Questions

Comparison Questions are relatively easy to answer. They are a bit like spot the difference. You will have to show how two sources are the same or are different. One mark is allocated for process (eg how you tackle the question. ) N.B. it is NOT a question where you draw a table! QUESTION: Should you break the source down and take each point separately or do you write a mega sentence about one source then do the same about the other? Try this exercise:

Comparison- Spot the Difference Pick a pupil in the class who is the same sex as your teacher (careful now!). Write one sentence on how their dress is different. fiveNow list five differences between the pupils dress and the teachers dress. Now summarise in one sentence the differences between the two.

Mr Offer Mr Offer is about 20 (!) He is fairly short He is dressed smart and formally He has a blue shirt. He has a red tie He has black trousers. He has formal black shoes. He looks tired He is a bit embarrassing Ross Oliver is about 14 He is medium height He is wearing school dress code. He has a white shirt He has no tie. He has black trousers. He has a pair of black shoes He has a jumper. He looks a bit embarrassed

Question: How different are these two footie grounds? Source A Station Park, Deans. Home of Livingston Juniors Capacity: 3000 Average Attendance: 25 You have 3 minutes to write a comparison Source B Old Trafford, Manchester Home of Manchester United Capacity: 72, 000 Average Attendance: 72, 000

Old Trafford is a far bigger and more spectacular football ground than Station Park, Deans. Old Trafford is in Manchester, on the other hand Station Park is in Livingston. Old Trafford in the home of football giants, Manchester United where as Station Park is home of local side Livingston Juniors. Old Trafford has a capacity of 55,000 however Station Park has only 3,000. Old Trafford gets thousands every week, on the other hand Station Park gets a few dozen. Old Trafford has lots of seating and directors boxes where as Station Park has one shed.

Q. How far do Sources A and B agree about conditions in the mines in 1900? Give one sentence at the start which gives a general overview as to why the sources are the same and / or are different. Write a few more sentences comparing the sources point by point. Include phrases like: however, and on the other hand. Say where the sources agree or disagree. Source B Despite life-saving technological improvements such as the Davey lamp and steel winding gear, Britain’s mines are still a poor place to work. Pay is low, hours are long and tiring. Moreover, the threat of death still exists for Britain’s miners Source A There have been great improvements down here. We can see without the danger of explosion thanks to the Davey Lamp. We no longer have to carry the coal up – lifts do it for us. Our working hours are good and there have been few accidents this year. You have 5 minutes !

Now mark! The question is out of 4 1 mark for the correct process (the answer compares the two sources in turn) 3 marks for 3 correct points of comparison E.g. Agree Davey Lamp saves lives Agree Winding gear makes it easier Disagree on death Disagree on hours and general conditions

Now try another one.. Collect a past paper We study Contexts B, B and C Find an comparison question in one of these contexts and write an answer to it Make sure it is on a topic which you have studied!!! Get it checked by your teacher You have 10 minutes!

On a scale of 1 to 10.. How well do you understand ‘Compare’ ES questions ? 1 = I don’t understand! 10 = stop telling me how to do this!
