1. Joanna Hambidge Orientation Week 08-13-2015 Our Goals for Children/What is British Primary? As teachers we are called upon to be artists. We must remember that artistry does not come from the quantity of red, green, and yellow paint, or from the amount of clay or marble, but from the organizing vision that shapes the use of these materials. It comes form a sense of priority and design of those ideas. Instead of piling good teaching ideas into the classroom, we need to draw form all we know, feel and believe in order to create something beautiful. To teach well, we do not need more techniques, activities and strategies. We need a sense of what is essential. – Lucy Calkins

Some of the British Primary beliefs about growth and learning: -A child learns as a whole person. -A child learns as a unique person. -A child learns from motivation and interest -A child learns through active engagement and constructing meaning. -A child learns from appropriate challenge. -A child learns from making mistakes, reflection, and perseverance -A child learns from being exposed to example(s), and relevant feedback and support. -A child learns from interacting with others.

6. If I want my students to develop self-awareness, then as a teacher I need to model and facilitate times for my students to reflect and self-assess. If I want my students to be able to collaborate, then I must each them how to listen and talk to one another. If I want my students to experience joy in learning and life, then as a teacher I must connect them with something meaningful.

7. If I believe that a child learns as a unique person, then as a teacher, I must differentiate the learning for that child. If I believe that a child learns as a whole person, then as a teacher, I must get to know that child. If I believe that my students learn when they are motivated, then as a teacher I must find, or let them find, what interests them.

Who we are is woven into how we behave, how we approach colleagues, how we envision our work, our world, and our future together. We need to take the time, no matter how hectic our days become, to stare out at the sea or to sit quietly in the yard or up on the rooftop and ask ourselves what it is we care about and how honestly we share our lives and passions with one another and our students. New methods of instruction will continue to evolve in direct proportion to who we are, and how much of that we are willing to bring to our teaching.” - Maureen Barbieri
