Scientific Knowledge is Tentative  Although scientific knowledge is supported by a wealth of data from repeated trials, it is not considered the final word.  Scientific knowledge is at the same time stable and malleable. Scientists continually test and challenge previous assumptions and findings. 6

What are Observations?  Looking closely at something.  Using any of your five senses to collect information.  Using measurement tools to collect information.  Making qualitative observations.  Making quantitative observations. Challenge: Make observations of this burning candle. 7

What are Inferences?  When we bring our past experience into making a judgment based on an observation, it is an Inference.  For instance, you may observe that a person is running from a gas station. That may cause you to infer that they robbed it and are trying to get away. It is easy to infer incorrectly so we need to get all the facts. 8

Revisit Candle Burning Activity  Which are observations?  Which are Inferences? 9

OBSERVATIONS AND INFERENCES  It is important for students to understand the difference between observation and inference.  Students should also learn to make good observations and inferences, and understand the role that observations and inferences play in the development of scientific knowledge. 10

Is it an Observation or an Inference?  Here is a slideshow of 13 examples. Make 1 observation and 1 inference on each picture.  http://www.slideshare.net/mrgrasso/observation s-and-inferences-1942083 http://www.slideshare.net/mrgrasso/observation s-and-inferences-1942083 11

Science is … A Body of Knowledge  To observe is to look closely at something using any of the five senses and/or measurement tools.  To infer is to use observations to reach a conclusion based on evidence. (what you think) A Set of Methods or Processes  Make observation.  Make inferences.  Distinguish between observations and inferences. A Way of Knowing Scientific knowledge is based on observing & inferring. 12
