3 What are some major events leading to The War of 1812? US shipping was being harassed and cargo was seized. British blockade sealed ports and prevented ships from entering or leaving. Impressment of American sailors Economic Diplomacy Fails Jefferson’s Embargo Act of 1807 halted all trade with Europe Embargo is a government ban on trade with other countries Embargo was unpopular in port cities, especially in the North

4 Tecumseh’s Confederacy Believed the only way for Native Americans to protect their homelands was to form a confederacy. Aided by his brother, Tenskwatawa, the Prophet. Many tribes had already received payment for their lands and would not join. Battle of Tippecanoe made William Henry Harrison a hero. Native American was at the mercy of policies designed to favor white settlers.

Non-Intercourse Act Forbade trade with France and Britain; however President could reopen trade when either France or Britain lifted restrictions on American shipping War Hawks Southern congressmen favored war, even though it hurt the east such as John C. Calhoun (SC) and Henry Clay (KY). Madison proposed war; Congress approved the war declaration in early June.

Not everyone in the US wanted to go to war Military was small Standing Army was small Militia comprised most of our forces, and they did not like to fight outside of their state borders Small Navy Britain was a great Superpower and we could lose territory that was gained in the Treaty of Paris or the Louisiana Purchase

11 Consequences of The War of 1812 U.S. and G.B. agreed to return their land boundaries to where they were before war U.S. ability to defend itself won the respect and recognition of other nations U.S. nationalism (devotion to one’s country) increased Federalist Party lost its credibility and later disbanded U.S. industry grew and U.S. became more self sufficient
