Designing a Garden Fractions to Decimals….

Designing a Garden In Dayton, Ohio, the town council and the Garden Center created the largest community garden in the world. The community garden in Dayton has 1173 square plots of land that can be used by many individual people or families to make gardens. Each plot of land has an area of 100 square meters.

Justin’s family has a plot in the community garden. His father wants Justin to design the vegetable garden for his family. Justin may decide how much of the land to allocate for each type of vegetable his family wants to grow, but he must satisfy a set of conditions they put on the garden. Justin has to present the plan to his family with a drawing of the garden that specifies what fraction of the plot will be planted with each kind of vegetable.

Family Requirements Justin’s father wants to be sure potatoes, beans, corn, and tomatoes are planted. He wants twice as much of the garden to be planted in corn as potatoes. He wants three times as much land planted in potatoes as tomatoes. Justin’s sister wants cucumbers in the garden. Justin’s brother wants carrots in the garden. Justin’s mother wants eggplant in the garden. Justin wants radishes in the garden. Use Labsheet 4.1 to make a suitable plan. Name the fraction of the garden space that will be allotted to each kind of vegetable as part of your description. Explain how it will satisfy each member of the family.

Lab Sheet 4.1

Follow-Up: 1. Justin’s father says that he will not plant less than a square meter of any vegetable. Design a garden with the largest possible amount of land planted in potatoes that fits the conditions of the problem and has at least one square meter allotted for each vegetable.

Follow-Up: 2. Design a garden with the smallest possible amount of land planted in potatoes that fits the conditions of the problem and has at least one square meter allotted for each vegetable.
