Carrie Hunnicutt 2010 – 2011 Chapter 12 Section 1 The Republic of Texas We won, but now what?

President Sam Houston Vice President Mirabeau B. Lamar I.Sam Houston’s Government A. The first president of Texas was Sam Houston, the vice president was Mirabeau B. Lamar, Stephen Fuller Austin was Secretary of State

B.The capital was moved from Columbia to Houston, where there were muddy streets, crudely built houses, and swarms of mosquitoes Two enterprising businessmen from New York, brothers Augustus and John Allen, had been in the area for several years and recognized the potential of the land along the bayou. While they couldn’t obtain the Harrisburg land, they did purchase 6,000 acres on the south banks of Buffalo Bayou. In an optimistic - and shrewd - move, they named the town Houston after the newly minted hero of San Jacinto. Wagering that Sam Houston would be elected new president of Texas - and he was - the Allen brothers planned to offer up his namesake town as a new capital - and they did. Presenting the town as a “thriving port city” (a gross exaggeration at the time) and promising construction of a capital building, the brothers succeeded in winning congressional approval. And so Houston became the new capital of this fledgling nation.

II. The United States Delays Annexation A.Texas wanted to join the United States, but Mexico did not want to recognize independence, and the United States did not want to damage relationship with Mexico. B.The United States did not want to tip the balance of power between free and slave states, since Texas would join as a slave state, so annexation was blocked.

III.Recognition as a Nation A. The United States doubted Texas could keep independence from Mexico, but President Jackson officially recognized Texas on March 3, 1837. B. France and Great Britain finally recognized Texas in 1839 and 1840, especially since the British were interested in annexing Texas themselves.
