5 5 1.Vietnam has National STEM Master/Development plan in place. 2.STEM is one of national focus. 3. Key STEM goals: To identify, train & develop the talents for country future development. 4.STEM researches, curriculum, professional development efforts in place? Yes, going on but not so much results. 5.Vietnam Academy of Science & Technology (including 15 independent Institutes of different science & technology fields) plays key roles in developing STEM Master Plan for Vietnam. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education in Vietnam

6 6 1.2001: The Vietnam Fund for Scientific and Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) was established to support STEM in Vietnam: 1.Scientific & Technological creativity Contest (Projects already used in real life) 2.National Scientific & Technology Creativity Contest (Contest for project ideas). 3. Creativity Contest for Elementary & High schools students. 4.Hi Ed “ Students do science” Award 2.Since 2006, MOET, VIFOTEC & Intel prepared to re- align Vietnam Science Contest to Intel ISEF rules: 1.Held seminars to introduce Intel ISEF MOE officials, principals, teachers from high schools in Vietnam. 2.Vietnam joined Intel ISEF in 2009. 3.MOET, Ministry of Science & various Institutes, Universities shows strong supports. 3. Country Science Fairs status

7 7 4. Country STEM Education Challenges 1.Teachers’ limited experience to support project based learning and teaching science for students. 2. Right curriculum for students and teachers to learn science. 3.Funding & infrastructure are not enough. 4. Short of good mentors for students and judges. 5. Coordination amongst government agencies to implement Government STEM policy  have funds but do not know how to spend wisely.

9 9 Action Plan Guidelines  This is your working document  What do you want to accomplish:  Who is going to do what  When is it going to get done  What resources did you see this week that you’d like to adapt for use  What resources do you need for your plan  Tell us what helped you most, what is missing, and what needs improvement  As you work, post your Action Plan on the Ed Academy Community so that others may observe your work ( www.inteledacademy.org)www.inteledacademy.org  A report out of accomplishments is due Nov. 15  Work with your Intel Education Manager to submit  Note: sample completed Action Plans from 2009 are on the Intel website: http://www.intel.com/education/isef/isef/overview.htm http://www.intel.com/education/isef/isef/overview.htm

10 10 High Level Goals 1.Long term goals: 1.Government to allocate more annual budget for STEM. 2.To build a professional & high quality labor force for the country. 3. Renovate the education system to support inquiry based learning. 4. Attract and motivate more students to take math & science career. 2.Short term goals: 1.Revise & align the science & technology contest standards. 2.Identify, train & develop students having creative ideas in research and projects formulation.

11 11 Objectives 1.How will you know you succeeded?: 1.Strong determination & interest from MOET, DOET, Teachers, Students and parents. 2.Supports from government agencies. 3.Press support. 2.list the results you want to see: 1.National STEM policies influenced in positive ways 2.National STEM master plans and development plans in place. 3.Have structured professional development and capacity building plans for local STEM educators in place. 4.Systemic curriculum changes underway; 5,000 teachers trained in Project Based Learning (or Inquiry research) or new curriculum adopted. 5.Governments allocated increasing investment for supporting national STEM education and science fairs. 6.Student researches on STEM are increasing over year/Patent ratio increasing over year too. 7.Student participation in affiliated increases 100 % over next 2 years. 8.Results from Intel ISEF finalists are improving positively. 9.Intel ISEF alumni created and assume role in the society to promote STEM educations to not only educators/students but to public. 10.Volunteers/mentors increases 50 % during the 2010-2011 school year

Mobile IT Classroom Stay connected with STEM Educators –What types of presentations/posters/activities were missing? How to teach teachers to teach science.

14 14 Continuing The Momentum Built; ASEA2010 Next Steps & Call for your participation One of key goals of ASEA2010 is to sustain the network among participants and collectively move forward to support STEM education and capacity building of educators across Asia; –Organizers will create “Asia Community of Science Educators”: Would you like to join the community? Yes. –On Day 4, organizers will call for “ASEA2010 Declaration”, asking for continued engagement and collaboration; Would you like to participate in the declaration act? Yes. –As part of sustaining strategy for ASEA2010, organizers will call for “ASEA Steering Committee” among delegates/speakers/organizers Would you like to join the steering committee? No, because of language issues –Steering Committee may provide regular webinars and online activities, throughout the year until the ASEA2011 Would you like to join the webinars as either speakers or participants? Yes.
