 Latin America is unique as a region because both North and South America were at one time completely controlled by European powers.  This shared history of colonialism fostered in the Americas a desire for independence and self government.

 The first successful revolution that took place in the new world was in 1776 when the American colonists declared independence from Great Britain and became the United States.  Following that, revolutions sprang up in the Caribbean and through the rest of Latin America.  By the mid 1800s almost all of Latin America had gained independence.

 However there were some key differences between the U.S. and other Latin American revolutions 1. The U.S. created a new form of government different from its colonial powers. 2. Many Latin American countries adopted the same system just with new people in charge 3. The U.S. declined to create a national church 4. Many Latin American countries maintained close ties to the Catholic church

 Draw a box on your notes and answer the following question.  Latin American countries have seen numerous revolutions while the U.S. has essentially only experienced two (the revolution and the civil war). What about the difference in their histories would help explain why that is?

 Like other Latin American Countries Argentina gained independence through revolution.  And like other Latin American countries Argentina has experienced several revolutions and coups since.

 Like the United States Argentina has three branches of government; executive, legislative, and judicial.  Argentina also guarantees freedom of religion  However unlike the U.S. Argentina’s constitution requires that the government support the Catholic church.

 Religion is a major part of Argentina’s history and culture.  A vast majority of Argentina's population consider themselves Catholic.  The current Pope, Pope Francis I, is the first Pope to be elected from outside of Europe and he is originally from Argentina Pope Francis and Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

 Argentineans are avid sports fans and are passionate about football (soccer).  Argentina is also heavily influenced by European culture and many buildings are designed in European styles. Presidential palace, Casa Rosada

 On your notes create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the U.S. and Argentina. Make sure to look at the history, government, religion, and culture of both countries

1. What is the predominate religion in Argentina? 2. What is one way the U.S and Argentina are similar and what is one way they are different? 3. What is one new thing you learned about Argentina?
