BEFORE CLASS This is an excellent time to review: Primary research methods Interviews Observations Surveys (Think about advantages and disadvantages of each) Danger of death questions (in interviews) Observer’s Paradox Research proposals as a genre How to draft individual sections Uses in future academic and professional environments APA formatting and style

QUIZ 3 (Content removed)

TODAY’S GOALS Examine previous successful informative articles and professional multimedia presentations Begin thinking of ideas for our own informative media project

GROUP ACTIVITY: INFORMATIVE ARTICLE ANALYSIS In your unit 2 groups Select an example student informative article, read through it while paying special attention to the style and formatting conventions, and answer the questions below: 1.How does the writer attempt to grab reader attention in the introduction? Is this an effective strategy? 2.What is the issue or question that the essay attempts to address? Would you describe the essay as governed by a thesis question or a thesis statement? 3.How does the writer present the findings (thus far) of their research? Does this seem like an appropriate presentation for the publication they selected? (How are they talking about their research) 4.How does the writer attempt to meet the conventions of the publication for which they are writing? Pay special attention to visual rhetoric here, including use of pictures, tables, columns, nut graphs, headings, etc. (this is the most important question) After you have thoroughly analyzed your chosen article, I highly recommend that you browse through the others for ideas

INFORMATIVE MEDIA PROJECT Print media 1,000+ word essay that matches the genre conventions of a professional publication (newspapers, magazines, scholarly articles, research reports, web articles) Utilize one primary research method Research and writing done individually Utilize 4 or more secondary sources Other media 5-8 minute presentation using digital media (newscasts, documentaries, podcasts, etc) that will be presented to the class Utilize two primary research methods Work in groups of up to 3 Utilize four or more secondary sources

JOURNAL ENTRY 24 Focus: Publication Brainstorm Based on our class activities and discussion, begin thinking about what publication you would like to use for your informative article. Of the media types we have discussed in class (newspapers, magazines, scholarly articles, research reports, web articles, podcasts, newscasts, ), which do you think would be most appropriate for your primary research topic and method? What primary research method is most commonly used in that publication type? Does this align with your primary research method? Within your publication type, what specific publications might be appropriate for your informative article? If you have a specific publication in mind, what formatting and style conventions can be utilized to match that publication’s conventions?

FORM NEW GROUPS Spend the next 10 minute sharing your topics and research methods with other students in the class. Then discuss what mediums you think would be most appropriate for presenting this information For students using print media (newspapers, magazines, scholarly articles, research reports, web articles), you can keep your own topic as you conduct research and begin drafting your informative article. You will be grouped up with other students using print media for our group activities For students doing a media presentation (PowerPoint, newscasts, podcasts, PSAs), you can create groups of up to 3 students to do your presentation. You must select one topic and two primary research methods to investigate it

GROUP ACTIVITY: MEDIA PROJECT PLANNING In your new unit 3 groups Answer the following questions about your proposed media project: 1.What is the subject matter and research question you will use for your project (there will be more than one per group) 2.What primary research method(s) will you use to answer that question? What will you be looking for as you conduct this research? 3.For print media groups, identify what publication each person will be working with. For media presentation groups, identify what medium you will be using for your presentation 4.How will you match the style and rhetoric conventions of that type of media? After answering these questions, it is recommended that you exchange contact information and begin planning out your primary research.
