3 DEFINATION OF SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy is, simply, energy provided by the sun. This energy is in the form of solar radiation, which makes the production of solar electricity possible. Solar energy is free and is available to all, however its benefits are greatest in the sunnier parts of the world such as the Caribbean. SOLAR CORP.

4 In less sunny places, such as northern Europe, energy can still be captured from the Sun, but the cost of the equipment required is high and the number of days on which useful amounts of energy can be obtained is relatively low. Solar energy has been looked upon as a serious source of energy for many years because of the vast amounts of energy that are made freely available, if harnessed by modern technology. 5 HARNESSING AND USE OF SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy is collected by solar collectors, devices that harness the sun's energy and convert it or pass it on to other materials as a source of heat or light. Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis. 6 It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power and solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the sun, selecting materials with favourable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air. 10 HOW SOLAR DEVICES WORK (PHOTOELECTRON EFFECT) The photoelectric effect is the observation that many metals emit electrons when light shines upon them. Electrons emitted in this manner can be called photoelectronics. The phenomenon is commonly studied in electronic physics, as well as in fields of chemistry, such as quantum chemistry or electrochemistry. SOLAR CORP.

11 ACTIVE OR (PHOTOTHERMAL) SOLAR ENERGY Solar thermal energy (STE) is a form of energy and a technology for harnessing solar energy to generate thermal energy or electrical energy for use in industry, and in the residential and commercial sectors. Active solar energy systems require mechanical power, usually electric pumps and other apparatus, to circulate air or water from solar collectors to a location where the heat is required, or can be stored until used. 12 . The first installation of solar thermal energy equipment occurred in the Sahara Desert approximately in 1910 when a steam engine was run on steam produced by sunlight. 16 PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY Passive solar energy systems often involve architectural design, which enhances the absorption of solar heat energy by adjusting for natural changes that occur throughout the day or the year without requiring mechanical power. Passive solar energy also provides natural lighting to buildings through windows and skylights. SOLAR CORP.

17 In passive solar building design, windows, walls, and floors are made to collect, store, and distribute solar energy in the form of heat in the winter and reject solar heat in the summer. This is called passive solar design because, unlike active solar heating systems, it does not involve the use of mechanical and electrical devices. The key to design a passive solar building is to best take advantage of the local climate performing an accurate site analysis. Elements to be considered include window placement and size, and glazing type, thermal insulation, thermal mass, and shading. Passive solar design techniques can be applied most easily to new buildings, but existing buildings can be adapted or "retrofitted". SOLAR CORP.

20 PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY (SOLAR FURNACES) Solar furnace is a structure that captures sunlight to produce very high temperatures, used for industrial purposes. This is done with a curved mirror (or an array of mirrors) that acts as a parabolic reflector (device used to collect or project energy such as light, sound, or radio waves), concentrating light onto a focal point. The temperature at the focal point may reach 3,500 °C (6,330 °F), and this heat can be used to generate electricity, melt steel, and make hydrogen fuel or nano materials. SOLAR CORP.

23 PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY (SOLAR COOKERS) A Solar Cooker is a device which uses the energy of direct sunlight to heat, cook or pasteurize food or drink. Many solar cookers presently in use are relatively inexpensive, low-tech devices, although some are as powerful or as expensive as traditional stoves, and advanced, large-scale solar cookers can cook for hundreds of people. Because they use no fuel and cost nothing to operate, many nonprofit organizations are promoting their use worldwide in order to help reduce fuel costs (especially where monetary reciprocity is low) and air pollution, and to slow down the deforestation and desertification caused by gathering firewood for cooking. 26 PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell, is an electrical device that converts the energy of light directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect, which is a physical and chemical phenomenon. It is a form of photoelectric cell, defined as a device whose electrical characteristics, such as current, voltage, or resistance, vary when exposed to light. 29 CONCLUSION Solar energy is clean renewable energy that can be use in many ways both on a large scale, as it relates to passive and active solar energy techniques, in the forms of solar cookers and solar furnaces as well as passive solar energy systems which involve architectural designs. This versatile and never ending source of energy coupled with modern technologies and applications can be used to create alternative power sources and endless sources of clean and inexpensive energy solutions.
