1 Tourism on Zanzibar East Africa The island’s economy has suffered from a decline in the spice trade, no industrial development and a growing population – with 35% unemployment

3 Where is Zanzibar ? Population is 750,000 It is expected to double by 2006. The archipelago is 68km long and 39km wide. 35 % of the population is unemployed. The island needs to develop ways of dealing with this.

4 What are the physical and human attractions ? Ideal weather with temperatures averaging 28 and 38 degrees. The island has a large number of coral reefs and white sandy beaches in the North part of the Island. Visitors are charged an entrance fee of US$50 to enter the village where there are hotels. Warm ocean temperatures 27 oC. Snorkelling, Swimming and Scuba Diving are the very common. Dolphins around Kizimkazi.

5 Physical Attractions National Forest is 24km South of Zanzibar Town. Home to the Red Monkey. The forest has an excellent nature trail. Superb beaches with giant tortoise on the island.

6 Human Factors Muslim Country with many mosques to visit. Plantations of cloves and spices. Chumbe Island – Zero impact on the environment. Safari at the Amboseli game reserve.

7 Stone Town only functioning ancient town in East Africa.

8 World Heritage site with places to visit such as Dr Livingstone's house.

10 What are the Impacts on the area ? Small scale impact at present. Development of tourism has meant a loss of fishing stock as tourists use the beach as a resource. East Coast had no hotels but several Fresh water is only for the benefit of the hotels. Tourists and leisure activities, such as snorkelling and wind surfing, comes first and access for the local community to earn a living, second. New job opportunities as a result of tourism. The jobs are menial and low paid. The improved infrastructure, such as roads, benefits the local population. No sewage treatment centres. Raw sewage and hospital waste flows straight into the Indian Ocean. Sewage is on the beach.

12 Sustainability and Zanzibar Redevelop the town with historical features at the heart of it. The government needs to take further action to preserve the coastline to protect turtles and coral reef around the islands. There has been an increase in the number of robberies and muggings on the east coast. Tourists in the area have a strict Muslim code.

15 Growing Concerns Sewage on the beaches. Waste is dumped into the island with no control. There will be a serious contamination of water supplies. Lack of drinking water.

16 Coral Park Chumbe Island There are only seven bungalows. Built in 1999 it has won the British Airways Tourism for tomorrow awards.

17 Rain water is collected on the roof in the rainy season. It then passes through a filter and is stored underground. Lights are powered by solar panels on the roof. ? ? Water is heated by Solar Energy. ?

18 Shower water passes into flower beds which are planted with species that are demanding in water nutrients. ? Eco Toilets are fitted which decompose human waste quickly and efficiently. ?

21 Activities for Coral Park guests All must be done with a local tour guide.

22 Snorkelling Trails around the Island. Identify Plants Inter tidal Zone Walks. Light house can visited with a guide.

23 Rangers patrol the island ensuring the forest reserve is protected Chumbe reef remains unspoilt as it provides an essential breeding area for declining fisheries species.
