1. Ray Rice suspended by NFL

Running back Ray Rice was released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL on Monday, the same day a shocking video surfaced showing the NFL star knocking out his future wife with a punch in February. Yesterday a news release from the Ravens announced that they had removed Rice from the team. Shortly after the team's announcement, the league said the three- time Pro Bowl selection was suspended indefinitely. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who had originally given Rice a two-game ban, increased the suspension after viewing the new video for the first time. While this incident was being investigated, Goodell said that from now on the league will institute a six-game suspension for those who violate the league's policy when it relates to domestic violence. A second domestic violence incident would be punished by a lifetime ban.

In Other News Samuel Truett Cathy, who grew his boneless chicken sandwich business from one store in Georgia to the Chick-fil-A chain -- a $5 billion company with more than 1,800 locations -- died early Monday morning. He was 93. He had been ailing for some time. Deeply religious, Cathy made the decision when he opened his first store in Hapeville, Georgia, that it would stay closed on Sundays. Sixty-eight years later, that policy still stands at all Chick-fil-A stores. Harvard just landed a record $350 million pledge from a wealthy Hong Kong family. The pledge from the Morningside Foundation will help support Harvard's School of Public Health, the university said Monday. It will be the largest donation that Harvard has ever received. A movie production team has bought the rights to the book Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City’s Most Unwanted Inhabitants by Robert Sullivan and are developing a feature-length documentary based on the often hidden world beneath the streets and sidewalks of New York City. The film (which will begin production next year) will document the rats’ first migration to America centuries ago on European ships coming from London, Norway and Holland and share different points of view from trash collectors to Nobel-winning scientists.
