Mango is cross pollinated and heterozygous annual fruit crop if propagated by seed (stones) leads to large scale variation in progenies. Commercially various vegetative propagation methods are successfully adopted in Mango seedling nursery under protective structures. The best one is Shade Net House for propagation of Mango seedlings in nursery. Introduction

A shade net house of 20m x 10m size and 2m height should be erected using a framework of GI (Galvanized Iron) pipes. UV (Ultra Violet) stabilized HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) shade net of 50 % intensity is used to cover the nursery. 40 mesh UV stabilized nylon insect proof net is used to prevent entry from outsider pests in shade net house. Establishment of Shade Net Nursery

The seed are collected from fully mature or riped Mango fruits. The seed should be free from post harvest diseases and seed /stone weevils. Mango seeds/stones lose viability to germinate in a short time and therefore, seeds should be sown within a week after collection. Husking or decortications of the hard endocarp of seeds improves germination. Before sowing, stones should be treated with 1 percent organo-mercurial fungicides to check soil borne diseases. Selection of Seed

Select the proper propagation method which you can adopt in the nursery and followed it. Raising of Rootstocks. The seeds are raised in polythene bags with perforations at the base of polythene bags for drainage. The polythene bags are filled with a mixture of garden soil and compost in equal proportion (1:1). Germination of seed / stone takes place within 10-15 days after sowing. Methods of Vegetative Propagation

Preparation of scion Scion sticks should be prepared from healthy and disease free mother plants of the desired Mango variety. Scion sticks are defoliated 8-10 days before separation from mother plant for grafting operation. The length of scion should be 10 to 20 cm. Very short or very long scion stick should be avoided in Mango grafting.

After Care The seedlings are regularly irrigated and fertilized to attain satisfactory growth. Seedlings must be kept free from diseases and pest by timely application of fungicides and insecticides. The nursery should be closed monitored for weeds and sanitation. Union of the graft takes place after 8-10 days of grafting operations. The polythene strip is removed after successful union.
