Elements of Art The elements of art are a set of visual techniques that describe ways of presenting artwork. Elements of art also refer to the visual language of the visual arts. The elements of art can include many or all of the following: color, value, line, shape, space, and texture

Elements of Art Line A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin. They lead your eye around the composition and can communicate information through their character and direction.

Space Space can be thought of as the distance or area around, between, above, below or within places. In art, space can be described as either two dimensional or three dimensional. Positive space is the space taken up by objects (surface). Negative space is the distance between objects and the background (whitespace).

Space continued…….. The space in two dimensional artworks such as paintings, drawings, prints and photographs (flat space) is essentially limited to height and width. Three dimensional space is recognized as having height, width, depth, and is referred to as actual space. This would include sculpture, furniture, architecture, ceramics and jewelry.

Shape The two-dimensional representation of an object.Shapes can be geometric, or organic. Geometric shapes include mathematical, named shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, cubes, spheres, and cones. Geometric shapes and forms are often man-made. Organic shapes are typically irregular or asymmetrical. Organic shapes are often found in nature

Value Value describes the lightness (tint) or darkness (shade) of a color. Color is light reflected off objects. Color has 3 main characteristics: hue (red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is). Colors can be described as warm (red, yellow) or cool (blue, gray), depending on which end of the color spectrum they fall.

Elements of Art

Texture The surface quality of an object that we sense through touch. All objects have a physical texture.
