1 Using Persuasive Techniques to Write a Hook Essential Question: How do I write a hook and which hook is the best for me?

2 What’s a Hook? You can think of an essay hook as you would a fishing hook: it's something that grabs readers and reels them in. The hook for your essay could be interesting sentence(s) that capture attention and keeps the reader reading.

3 What are the different types of Hooks? Anecdote Quote (testimonial) –From an EXPERT Statistics/Fact (research) Rhetorical Question

4 Anecdote An Anecdote is a mini story that is related to the topic of your essay. Three to five sentences Third person POV / NPR

5 Quote – ONE QUOTE The Quote must be from an expert on your paper’s topic. You must identify the source of the quote! Integrate the source in the same sentence as the quote. one to two sentences

6 Statistic/Fact Provides relevant researched information that allows you to introduce your topic. Facts should be insightful and shocking. –Don’t bore the reader!!! –two to four sentences

7 Rhetorical Question An open ended question about a part or the whole of your topic. Question is intended to spark thought now and an answer later (conclusion paragraph). Two to three sentences.

8 How do I end the Intro after the Hook? All hooks end the same way, no matter what persuasive technique you choose to start the paragraph. We must create a sentence that bridges the gap between the hook and the thesis. We finish Persuasive Intros with a thesis statement that lists the main ideas.
