HOW TO CHOOSE Big Differences Aluminum Vs Carbon Road Vs Aero Different Specs For the Same Model Things To Consider How much will I be biking? What are my goals for the year? Is this my only bike

ALUMINUM VS CARBON Carbon is stiffer and lighter Easier to climb hills Overall better ride feel Aluminum is Cheaper Can put money towards other equipment Aluminum will not prevent you from training If your goal is primarily to improve yourself aluminum will work just fine Carbon is faster, especially on hilly courses, but not by much. Think just a few minutes off you bike time Carbon IS nicer to have, but you don’t need it to train or race Consider how often you bike to see if price difference is worth the upgrade

ROAD VS AERO Road Bikes are more stable and easier to ride in group rides If you are primarily going to train with the team I’d get a road bike Safer when quick maneuvering is required More comfortable on long rides Able to attach clip on aero bars for races Aero Bikes reduce the amount of wind you have to bike through Allows you to bike faster when you aren’t drafting Looks super cool Hard to turn quickly, shifters can’t be used at the same time as brakes DO NOT GET AN AERO BIKE AS YOUR ONLY BIKE The choice is up to you, but I would recommend new bikers start with a road bike

BIKE SPECS Differences between models includes upgraded shifters, breaks, and wheels There may be other differences as well, check Specialized’s website for more info Upgraded shifters shift cleaner and faster May not be an issue with any new bike, but upgraded shifters will require less adjustment over time and will feel nicer Breaks help you stop The faster you can stop, the later you have to start slowing to make a turn Also helps when a car pulls in front of you Lighter wheels make you go fast Rotating mass takes a lot of energy. Wheels spin fast. Light wheels take less energy to spin at the same speed. This also makes the overall weight of the bike less.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER Clipless pedals make a HUGE difference Road bike and clip on aero bars come very close to the efficiency of an aero bike, although you won’t be able to shift in the aero position Consider how much you’ll be riding, and how long you plan to keep the bike. Upgraded components may seem costly, but if it means a smother ride over the next 4-5 years it may be worth it. Remember that there is a lot of other triathlon gear you’ll want to get later on this year. Don’t spend all your money on the first order. In the end the decision on what bike to get is up to you. Whatever you choose, remember that the part of a bike that most affects its speed is the person riding it.
