Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 improving the management effectiveness of 83 protected areas with a total area of over 14 million hectares; 7 new PAs established covering 1.2 million hectares mainstreaming biodiversity into 9 million hectares; working with agriculture (10), fishery (1), tourism (9), forestry (6), mining (1), NTFP (1). Current Portfolio: Impacts

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 Progress towards achieving target indicators:

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 METT conducted in 52 sites in 12 countries: 49% scores improvement

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 Strategy and Action Plan Pressure: State: Response (defined as):Strategy Pressure - changes in pressures on BiodiversityReduction in pressures threatening biodiversity within (i) Protected Areas and (ii) Production landscapes State - changes in state of BiodiversityImprovement in the status (long-term security) of biodiversity assets, Response: changes in country capacity to manage pressures Barriers to remedial action are addressed Normative Solutions: a.Biogeographically representative Protected Area estates are serving as a bulwark against human induced threats on lands where conservation objectives have primacy. b.Biodiversity management is codified within production systems on production lands where production takes primacy over conservation.

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 BIODIVERSITY FOCAL AREA GOAL: Conservation and Sustainable Use of biodiversity and maintenance of the ecosystem goods and services that biodiversity provides to society Strategic Objective 1: Catalyzing Sustainability of Protected Area Systems Strategic Objective 2: Mainstreaming bd conservation in production landscapes/seascapes and sectors Strategic Objective 3: Safeguarding Biodiversity Strategic Objective 4: Capacity Building on Access and Benefit Sharing Strategic Programs: 1.Sustainable Financing 2.Marine Protected Areas 3.Terrestrial Protected Areas Strategic Programs: 1.Policy and Regulatory Framework 2.Fostering Markets for Ecosystem Goods and service Strategic Programs: 1.Biosafety 2.Invasive Alien Species Strategic Programs: 1.Capacity Building on Access and Benefit Sharing OPERATIONAL PROGRAMS STILL VALID IN GEF IV (1, 2, 3, 4 and 13)

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 SOSPEligible elementsIndicators 1. Catalyzing Sustainability of PAs Sustainable Financing of PAS (i) policies and laws to allow PAs to manage the entire revenue stream; (ii) business planning (iii) capacity building to manage PAs on sound principles of business planning and conservation; (iv) recognition of the support to PAs made by communities living in and near PAs Total revenue and diversification in revenue streams Increasing Representation Of Effectively Managed MPAs in PA Systems (i) establishment of coastal and marine PAs – to increase coverage; NEW PAs (ii) improved management effectiveness Number and extent (coverage) of MPAs compared to 2006 global baseline for GEF eligible countries. METT scores Strengthening Terrestrial PA networks (i) addressing ecosystem coverage gaps NEW PAs (ii) demonstrate that resources are reallocated to the additional PAs and that the reallocation results in a management effort consistent with the levels throughout entire PA system Number of new PA Established METT scores Financial Scorecard Institutional Scorecard Strategic Objective 1

Environment and Energy Community of Practice meeting, Bratislava, 24 – 26 September, 2007 Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Production Landscapes/Seas capes and Sectors Strengthening the Policy and Regulatory Framework (i) remove knowledge barriers; (ii) develop institutional capacity (iii) establish policy, legislative and regulatory frameworks required to integrate bd conservation objectives into the actions of the productive sectors. The degree to which policies and regulations governing sectoral activities include measures to conserve bd as measured by GEF tracking tool. Fostering Markets for Ecosystems Goods and Services (i) markets for ecosystems goods and services; (ii) global certification systems for goods produced in agriculture, fisheries, forestry and other sectors - supply chain initiatives Number and extent (coverage: hectares payments generated) of new payment for environmental service schemes created; Published certification standards for biodiversity friendly goods. Strategic Objective 2 Strategic Objective Strategic ProgramEligible elementsIndicators
