3 Mission Statement The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is the federal agency responsible for enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information.

4 EEOC INFORMATION The EEOC began in 1965 under Article VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Section 2000e-14) 1972- Congress gives the EEOC power to sue employers suspected of illegal discrimination Enforces the Law; Members Appointed by the President Executive Branch

5 Purpose Responsible for enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination Most employers with at least 15 employees are covered by EEOC laws Most labor unions and employment agencies are also covered. Fairly and accurately assess the allegations in a charge and then make a finding Work to prevent discrimination before it occurs through outreach, education and technical assistance programs. The laws apply to all types of work situations, including hiring, firing, promotions, harassment, training, wages, and benefits.

9 Clarence Thomas Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas served as the Chair of the EEOC from 1982- 1990

10 Bureaucratic Red Tape or Crucial Staple?? In the ‘60s when this agency was created I believe it was highly crucial to the American Bureaucracy. Today, however, I believe that there have been vast improvements and advancements in the Employment field in regards to discrimination. This agency is still a necessity but its importance has, in my opinion, become less and less important over time. Hopefully this agency will no longer be needed in the future.
