Energy Resources Electrical Power Plants Mr. Matthew Rodman Science Patria Mirabal Middle School (MS 324) New York City, New York, USA

Focus How do energy resources cause environmental impact? Why is it difficult to select a “best” energy resource?

Energy Resources An energy resource is a resource that can be used to make electricity. This is done in a power plant, a type of “factory” for making electricity. All power plants have the same basic design, but use different fuels.

Power Plants Power plants use a resource to heat water to its boiling point to make steam. That steam is used to turn big magnets called turbines. Spinning magnets make electrical fields. The water cools off and returns to the reservoir and the cycle repeats.

Types of Energy Resources (Nonrenewable) Coal – burned to heat water and make steam to turn turbines Oil (Petroleum) – burned to heat water and make steam to turn turbines Natural Gas (Methane) – burned to heat water and make steam to turn turbines Uranium – nuclear reactions heat water and make steam to turn turbines

Types of Energy Resources (Renewable) Wind – wind blows over giant turbines making them spin like a pinwheel Sun (Solar) – mirrors focus sunlight to heat water and make steam to turn turbines Water (Hydroelectric) – water flows over turbines and makes them turn Biomass – oils in food are converted to fuel that can be burned to heat water to make steam and turn turbines

Review 1.What are some examples of renewable energy resources? 2.What are some examples of nonrenewable energy resources? 3.What are some advantages to using nuclear power? 4.What are some disadvantages to using wind power?

Questions SUMMARIZE: What are some differences between the different types of energy resources? APPLY: Which of the energy resources is best? Why? EXPLAIN: What tradeoffs are involved in the selection of energy resources?
